SUBMISSIONS Exploring the Earthbound Consequences of Space Expansion

*Proto-Astroethics: A Zine Exploring the Earthbound Consequences of Space Expansion

working title

We are seeking submissions for a zine that explores the concept of “Proto-Astroethics” – a framework that examines the ethical, environmental and sustainability implications of space exploration and expansion.

Proto-Astroethics is a term I’ve coined based on inspiration by visionary poets who have imagined space travel and alternative futures. Proto-Astroethics represents an innovative approach that merges ethics, creativity, sustainability and critical assessment of the impact human scientific advancement has on our planet. This framework aims to address the environmental degradation, displacement, and other consequences on local communities by global space programs. While not grounded in existing academic theories, Proto-Astroethics goal is to draw attention to the potential negative impacts of unchecked technological progress, and to advocate for more responsible, ethically-grounded practices in space exploration.

Through this zine, we want diverse local and regional perspectives on the real-world impacts of global space programs, with a focus on marginalized communities. We welcome submissions of art, photography, mixed media, personal essays, poetry, and other creative works that:

  • Critically examine the environmental degradation, displacement, and other consequences on local communities by space industry activities
  • Envision more sustainable, equitable and ethically-grounded approaches to space exploration and development
  • Highlight the visionary work of poets, artists and activists who have imagined alternative futures for space travel and its relationship to our home planet, and each other
  • Explore intersections between space expansion, environmental justice and the preservation of indigenous lands and lifeways

We are particularly interested in submissions that draw connectionsbetween space programs operating in the Rio Grande Valley and other regions across the United States and beyond. However, we welcome contributions from all geographic areas impacted by the global space race.

We encourage submissions that blend creativity, activism, and a commitment to environmental and community well being.

The deadline for submissions is TBD.
